Nirvrithi
This restored home built in 1865, unique for that time, reveals a distinctive colonial face on the outside with prominent pillars, arches and a grand elevated sloping tile roof, the inside was defined by the daily needs and agricultural lifestyle of the Gounders – with minimal rooms and large undefined spaces for storage.
Each level of the restored block has been turned into a suite designed for a complete home experience. The expansive and airy open verandas around the living quarters on both floors offer the opportunity to laze with a book, be immersed in music or in quiet meditation. The bedrooms, with 2 ft. thick soundproofed walls built in 1865, are slumber niches. Once snuggled in , it is often a challenge to get out of them. The living spaces within each block transforms into a library, work studio or a private lounge bar as you choose. The open courtyard with its lily pond and landscaped surroundings could be your personal yoga sanctuary. Each level has its own climate-controlled bedroom, living space, verandas and en-suite bathroom.

Dining
Passionately driven by their love for and understanding of great food, the hosts explore local ingredients and traditions to serve unimaginative, tasty and nourishing fare. Their menu will offer preparations made from locally sourced ingredients obtained from their own farm as well as those from the region. For Joesph and Ria, food is a passion, and the couple takes joy in preparing a range of cuisines from Indian to Italian. The ingredients grown on their farms such as pumpkin, tomatoes and chillies are a part of their dishes, along with the cream cheese, mascarpone and ricotta made at home from locally sourced, unpasteurised milk. Joseph highly recommends his slow-cooked lamb, cheesecakes and tiramisu. Ria’s pannacotta and pasta are a must.

Today, Agraharams are fast disappearing to make way for bigger, swankier apartments and modern houses. With the younger generation migrating to cities or other countries across the world in search of jobs, Agraharams now stand alone with only memories of an interesting way of life. Urbanisation has made the performance of elaborate rituals shorter, reflecting a marked change in contemporary lifestyle that can no longer be adapted to the Agraharam and its community. Privacy is valued a lot more today, which means common walls are a source of discomfort and common wells are no longer in use with every household opting to have their own plumbing systems.
