Living
Rubber plants were first introduced around 1873 in India by the Britishers and in Kerala in regions like Kottayam and Pathanamthitta were chosen.
An Irish planter, J J Murphy was the first to attempt Rubber Plantations in 1872 on the hill slopes of this region and established the first commercial rubber plantation in Kerala, the Murphy Estate at Yendayar. Villa Mariam, built in 1848 is located within one of the oldest and operational rubber plantations in the region after This Iconic Bungalow, used by the planter, was first renovated in 1937 and all modern amenities were incorporated and later used as a guest house of the now owners of plantation.
Dining
Villa Mariam has a fully equipped kitchen. Meals are simple and crafted in the Syrian
Christian Kerala way but a few tones lighter, in terms of spice. The breakfast served
will be traditional Kerala breakfast dishes. Lunch will be a traditional meal of
unpolished red rice served with a curry, yoghurt curry, a vegetable dish known as
thoran, a stir fried vegetable dish, pickles and pappadam. Dinner would be an option
of rotis, kerala parottas, appams or rice served with a curry, salad and a stir fried
vegetable. All meal requirements should be informed in advance so we can source the freshest produce available. Non-vegetarian options are also available to have along with Lunch & dinner. Our guests would need to inform us in advance of any special dietary requirements to enable us to make appropriate arrangements.
Activities
At Villa Mariam, you are surrounded by 140 acres of rubber plantation. The process of rubber harvesting begins with the tapping of rubber trees.
Get up early – before dawn – and you can see the “tappers”, torches strapped to their heads, carefully cutting thin strips ofbark to release the milky fluid.
A visit to a tea plantation is incomplete without getting to see how tea is made. What better than experiencing the same at the tea factory of Misty Mountain Plantation resort. A memorable experience of observing people and their machines as some of the finest tea in the world gets ready for market.

Our experiences
Nature walk
Different nature trails traversing diverse habitats form the trekking routes, generally 4 to 5 km. in length. This is an interpretive programme offering excellent opportunity to watch birds, butterflies and other wildlife. The trails often pass through evergreen and moist deciduous forests interspersed with marshy grasslands. The Nature walk is the right programme to feel nature, hear her whispers and smell her flowers.
